People who are new to Carver County from a foreign country should connect with a local medical provider to set up a “medical home”. If you are new to Carver County and the United States, you may qualify for a Refugee Health Assessment.

A Refugee Health Assessment helps identify any health issues that could affect your resettlement. The health assessment is tailored to your age, sex and the region you came from (for example, your home country or refugee camp). It may include:

  • Tests for illnesses that are more common in some countries
  • A review of immunization and medical records
  • A general health exam
  • Renewal of medications
  • Referrals to medical specialists, if needed

People who qualify for a Refugee Health Assessment often have public insurance (Medical Assistance), which covers the cost. Newcomers who are not eligible for a Refugee Health Assessment can receive help finding other healthcare resources.
