Notary Public Registration
To become a Notary Public in the State of Minnesota, you must first apply to the Minnesota Secretary of State. Once your new commission, reappointment, renewal, name change, or county of residence change has been approved by the Secretary of State and you have received your commission certificate, you MUST record your commission with your county of residence.
Notary Commission Certificate Filing
In Person - Carver County Land Records & Vitals Department - 600 East 4th Street, Chaska, MN 55318
When registering your commission with the county, please bring:
- Your notary commission certificate (do NOT sign until present)
- Valid Driver's License or State ID card (address must match commission)
- $20.00 filing fee (cash, check, or credit card)
By Mail - Carver County Land Records & Vitals - Attention: Vital Statistics, 600 East 4th Street, Chaska, MN 55318
When registering your commission by mail, you must send:
- Print and complete the Notary Commission Filing Form
- The commission certificate must include two signatures, one exactly as the name appears on the commission certificate and one as you would normally sign.
- Your signatures must be notarized
- Valid Driver's License or State ID
- $20.00 filing fee (Check made payable to Carver County
Changing your Name or Address
Names or address changes for a Notary Commission are completed through the Minnesota Secretary of State. Once the updated notary commission certificate is issued, you will need to register with the resident county in Minnesota.
Non-Resident Notary
The commission for a non-resident notary must be recorded in the Minnesota County stated on the notary commission.

Notary Certificate Request
A notary certificate authenticates and validates a notary public's signature. It is not the same as an apostille or secretarial certificate which as issued through the Minnesota Secretary of State
A notary certificate can only be issued if the notary commission filing was done in Carver County
You must present the document needing verification at the time of the certificate request
