Marriage Officiant
* Legislation effective JULY 1, 2025 requires anyone wishing to perform a marriage in the State of Minnesota to register with a county office *
Civil marriages may be solemnized throughout the state by an individual who has attained the age of 21 years and who registers as a civil marriage officiant with a local registrar in a county of this state. The county where the civil marriage officiant is registered must be endorsed upon and recorded with each certificate of civil marriage. (MN Stat 517.04)
Once you have registered, you may perform marriages anywhere in the State of Minnesota.
Filing Requirements
In person - Carver County Land Records & Vitals Department - 600 East 4th Street, Chaska, MN 55318
When registering in person with the county, please bring:
- Complete the Certificate of Filing Form. This form is also available in our office. Do not sign the form until you are with a staff member.
- Must by 21 years of age or older
- $30 Filing Fee by cash, check or credit card
By mail - Carver County Land Records & Vitals Department, Attention: Vital Statistics, 600 East 4th Street, Chaska, MN 55318
When registering by mail,
- Complete the Certificate of Filing Form. This form must be notarized if not signed in front of staff
- Must by 21 years of age or older
- $30 Filing Fee by check payable to Carver County
Information for Marriage Officiants
A marriage license that is issued by Carver County is given to applicants at the time they complete the application process. They receive three pieces of paper - the Marriage License, the Marriage Certificate, and a duplicate Marriage Certificate marked unofficial copy. They also receive an envelope that can be used to return the completed marriage certificate to our office.
The Marriage License shall be kept by the officiant as proof of your authority to solemnize the marriage.
The Marriage Certificate shall be completed by the officiant and signed by the parties. Failure to complete the certificate properly will result in a delay of the issuance of the certified marriage certificate.
