Chanhassen Service Center and Chaska License Center

Walk-in or appointment. All driver's license and State ID transactions require an application. Fill out the online pre-application. A paper application is available upon request.

The Chanhassen Service Center does not process first-time permit or State ID applications and new-to-state driver's licenses.  

Change of Address

This service is available at both locations.

• No additional documents are required for a change of address on a Standard. 
• The Real ID and Enhanced requires two different types of address documents in paper form from the approved Real ID Document Requirements  List or Enhanced Document Requirements List.

Change of Name

This service is available at both locations.

• You must change your name with the Social Security Agency first.
• Must provide certified name change document: marriage certificate, divorce decree, court order.

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

Renewal and upgrade to CDLs are available at both locations.

• CDL holders with a school bus or hazmat endorsement must test prior to applying. 
• Update your Medical Examiner's Certificate prior to applying.
• Must bring proof of domicile and Minnesota residency. Visit the State's website to review the required identification and residency requirements.

Duplicate Driver's License or ID

This service is available at both locations. 

• Proof of identity is not required if staff is able to locate record.
• Applicants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian or provide an application with a notarized signature of parent or guardian.

First-time Permit Applications

This service is only available at the Chaska License Center.

• You must provide a primary and secondary document or two primary documents. 
• You must provide a social security number.
• A parent or legal guardian (must bring guardianship paperwork) must sign the application. A notarized signature from a parent or guardian on a paper application may be used if a parent is unable to be present.

New-to-State Driver's License/ID

If you do not have a previous MN record or your MN record is expired over 5 years, please visit the Chaska License Center. If your previous MN driver's license/ID is expired less than 5 years, you may visit either location. 

• A test is required if under 21 years old or out of state license is expired.
• A driving record may be presented in place of driver's license.

Real ID and Enhanced

This service is available at both locations. 

• You may need a Real ID or Enhanced to board a domestic flight if you do not have a passport, passport card, or another federal level credential.
• A Standard driver's license or ID card are still accepted for State identification purposes and driving privileges if the record shows valid. 
• Bring original or printed PDF documents from the Real ID Document Requirements  List or Enhanced Document Requirements List. Substitutes will not be accepted.

Record Request

This service is available at both locations.

• Crash record. Complete the Crash Record Request form and submit in person or mail to DVS.
• Driving record. Complete a Record Request Form. Certified and non-certified only. Please visit a  State facility if a letter with date of license issuance is needed. 
• Motor vehicle record. 

Renewal

This service is available at both locations.

• A vision test and photo will be taken.
• Applicants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian (with guardianship paperwork) or present an application with a notarized signature of the parent or legal guardian.
• Additional documents may be required if upgrading to a Real ID or Enhanced or changing the address on a Real ID or Enhanced. Documents must be on the Real ID Document Requirements list or Enhanced Document Requirements list and in paper form. Substitutions will not be accepted.

State ID Card

First-time State ID card applications are only available at the Chaska License Center. Renewals are available at both locations.

• For a Standard ID, provide one primary and one secondary or two primary documents from the Standard ID acceptable documents list. A Real ID or Enhances requires two different types of residency documents from the approved list.
• A photo will be taken.

Exams

• Available at the State Exam Station located inside the Chaska License Center located at 418 Pine Street, Chaska, MN 55318. 
• Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. 
• Schedule or Reschedule a Class D Knowledge Exam or Road Test online or call (651)201-7777.
• Not available at the Chanhassen Service Center.
• There are no evaluators at this location. If you need evaluator services or a limited license, use the State's website Find a Location feature.
• You may not contact the State examiners directly. Call (651)201-7777 with any exam related questions.

Chanhassen and Chaska

Walk-in or appointment. Insurance information must be provided. Bring identification. The following services are provided at both locations.

• New-to-State registration.
• MN and foreign state title transfer.
• Mobile home transfer.
• Multiple vehicle tab renewals.
• Motor Vehicle record.

Title Transfer

The seller must complete the following information on the current Minnesota or foreign state title and provide a lien release (if applicable).

• Date of sale.
• Damage disclosure.
• Odometer statement (if required).
• Purchase price.
• Signature(s)

The buyer must present the following:

• Title as completed by the seller.
• Identification: driver's license, State ID, passport, or other federal ID.
• Current insurance information.
• Name and address of lending institution and the date of the loan (if applicable).

New-to-State Registration

If you are moving to Minnesota, the foreign state title must be submitted. If the title is being held by the lienholder, a current registration card may be submitted. If the registration card is expired over a year please bring a document from the approved list of required documentation for new-to-state vehicles. Applicants must also provide the following information:

• Driver's license, state-issued identification card, passport, or federal ID for all owners.
• Current insurance information: insurance company, policy number, and expiration date.
• The name and address of lienholder and date of loan.
• If the vehicle is leased the lessor's MN tax ID number, lienholder information and one of the following must be provided: a registration card listing the lessee, the lease agreement, or a power-of-attorney from the lessor.
• The owner's signature on the Application to Title and Register a Vehicle provided at time of registration.

Registration Renewal

For registration renewal, submit the renewal notice with the completed insurance information. If you receive emailed notices, print the notice and write in the insurance information. Fees vary according to vehicle classification, base value when brand new, and year of the vehicle.

• Never received or lost the renewal notice? The registered owner may provide current ID and insurance.
• Non-owner must bring a the renewal notice, power-of-attorney or registered owner, or written authorization from the registered owner to purchase registration.

Chanhassen Service Center

Walk-in service available until 3:00 or by appointment. Digital photos available at this location.

Carver County Government Center

Walk-in photos. Appointment only for application. This location does not process driver's licenses or motor vehicle transactions.

Apply in Person

 You may apply in person using the DS-11 form if at least one of the following is true:

• You are applying for your first U.S. passport.
• You are under the age of 16 or your previous U.S. passport was issued when you wer under the age of 16.
• Your previous U.S. passport was lost, stolen, or damaged.
• Your previous U.S. passport was issued more than 15 years ago.

All applicants using the DS-11 form must be present at their appointment (minors and adults). The DS-11 application requires two separate payments--one of the payments must be a check/money order.

Children Under 16

• Both parents must be present.
• Parents must have a valid ID.
• For renewal, the birth certificate and previous passports are required.

Fees

Passport Fees vary depending on the form you complete.

• You will need a separate check/money order for each passport application fee payable to U.S. Dept of State.
• The execution fee and photo fees can be paid as one payment with cash, check/money order, or credit card. Apple Pay is not accepted.

Photos

You may purchase passport photos at the Chanhassen Service Center and the Carver County Government Center.

• Walk-in photos are available at both locations.
• The fee for photos is $17.
• Digital photos for renewals are available at the Chanhassen Service Center.

If you need a passport for international travel within two weeks, call 1-877-487-2778 or an urgent appointment. Please note, appointments are limited and may not be in Minnesota.

Renewal

You must renew your passport by mail or online. Complete the DS-82 form if the following are true about your most recent passport:

• Is undamaged other than normal wear and tear.
• Was issued when you were age 16 or older.
• Was issued within the last 15 years.
• Was issued in your current name or you can document the change with an original or certified copy of your marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order.

Online passport renewals: Renew your passport online on the Travel.State.Gov U.S. Department of State website. You must provide a digital photo with the application. Digital photos are available at the Chanhassen Service Center and delivered via email.

The Chanhassen Service Center is not a state testing station for driver's licenses.

Driver's License Exams
This is a shared facility with the State Exam Station. Visit the Chaska facility for Class D knowledge test and Class D road test or to apply for a new Minnesota State Identification (ID) Card.

• State exam testing station hours are: 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday
• Class D knowledge test and Class D road test are available only by scheduled appointment.
• Motorcycle and CDL knowledge test on a standby basis as space is available.
