For a Successful Visit:

  • First time applications for permits, State ID cards, and NEW MN residents must visit Chaska.
  • Renewals, upgrades to REAL ID/EDL, passed skill exam applications, and new residents with recent previous MN record may visit either location.
  • Fill out the pre-application on the State's website 
  • Bring documents from the approved list (substitutes will not be accepted).
  • If you are providing a birth certificate and the name is not your current name, you will be asked to provide the document that shows each name change from birth to present. 

 

Driver's License Information

Real ID and Enhanced 

If you do not have a passport, passport card, or another federal level credential, you may need a REAL ID or Enhanced to board a domestic flight. More information and document requirements are available on the State's website. Not everyone qualifies for these types of licenses.

Standard driver's licenses and ID cards are still accepted for State identification purposes and driving privileges if the record shows valid

Renewal

This service is available at the Chanhassen and Chaska locations. A vision test and photo will be taken. Applicants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian (with guardianship paperwork) or present an application with a notarized signature of the parent or legal guardian. If possible, fill out a pre-application on the State's website.

Change of Name or Address

This service available at the Chanhassen and Chaska locations. You must change your name with the Social Security Agency prior to applying and will be asked to provide your certified name change document: marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order. A change of address on a REAL ID or Enhanced requires two different types of residency documents from the approved list. These documents must be originals or a printed PDF. If possible, fill out the pre-application on the State's website.

Reinstatement Fees

This service is available at the Chanhassen Service Center and the State Exam Station located in the Chaska License Center. Reinstatement fees must be paid with cash or check. Please note there are no evaluators at either location do not process limited licenses. Please visit the State's website for more information.

Exams

Class D knowledge and Class D road tests are available by appointment at the Chaska Exam Station. Schedule your appointment on the State's website  or call 651-284-1234. The driver's manuals are not available for purchase in this office, but can be accessed online. 

Renewal of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

You must bring proof of domicile and residency. A Self-Certification form will be provided. If your Medical Examiner's Certificate needs to be updated, this must be done with your medical professional before applying. Bring waivers if applicable. 

Proof of domicile (Updated 9/29/25):

  • Valid, unexpired U.S. passport or passport card
  • Certified copy of birth certificate from any U.S. state
  • Consular report of birth abroad issued by the U.S. Department of State
  • Certificate of Naturalization or Certificate of Citizenship issued by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security
  • Valid unexpired Permanent Resident Card

Proof of residency (Updated 9/29/25):

  • Current employment pay stub
  • Utility bills issued within the last 60 days: gas, electric, garbage or water
  • Current military orders
  • MN Property Tax Statement for current year
  • MN Vehicle Certificate of Title issued within the past year
  • Mortgage document or Purchase Agreement for current residence
  • Current residential lease agreement
  • W-2 form for prior tax year

The State is only accepting non-domicile applications for H2A, H2B, and E2 status. Please visit an Exam Station to apply.

Replacement of Driver's License

If your driver's license is lost or stolen, you will need to complete an application for a duplicate. If the staff is able to access your photo and signature on the state website, you will not be required to show identification. If they are unable to access this information, you would then need to show proof of identity. Proof of identity must be submitted when there is a change of name or address that accompanies the replacement application. Applicants under 18 years of age must be accompanied by parent or legal guardian or present an application containing a notarized signature of parent or legal guardian. The fee for replacing a driver's license is $26.00. For an Enhanced driver's license add $15.

State ID Card Information

In order to apply for a State Identification (ID) Card, you must present two forms of identity: a primary and a secondary document or two primary documents. This list is available on the State's website. A photo will be taken and printed on the ID. To receive a Reduced Fee Identification Card, a completed the Eligibility Verification for Reduced Fee ID Card form must be submitted.

  • Initial application fee for age 65 or under is $35.50. Renewal fee is $30.50.
  • Initial application fee for age 65+ is $32.00. Renewal fee is $27.00.
  • The fee for a duplicate ID card is $26.00. Add $15 for Enhanced.
  • The fee for the Reduced Fee ID Card is $0.50.
