Minnesota state law prohibits the disposal of motor oil, oil filters, and antifreeze on land, in the sewer system, or with regular solid waste. Improper disposal of these materials can damage vegetation and pollute water supplies. Even when drained, oil filters retain motor oil that can harm the environment if not handled properly. This prohibition also applies to other automotive fluids such as brake fluid, power steering fluid, and transmission fluid.
For disposal of small quantities of automotive oils and fluids, visit one of the oil recycling sites listed below.
What is accepted?
-
Motor oil
-
Automotive fluids (e.g., brake, transmission, power steering)
-
Lubricating and industrial process oils
-
Oil filters
-
Antifreeze (please keep separate from oil)
Preparation guidelines:
-
Store used motor oil in a sealed, clearly labeled container.
-
Do not mix motor oil with antifreeze, water, gasoline, or other fluids.
-
Avoid using containers that previously held antifreeze, bleach, paint, pesticides, or similar chemicals, as leftover residue may contaminate the oil.
