The Watertown Wetlands Restoration Project is a multi-year effort led by Carver County, in partnership with the City of Watertown, to restore and improve a natural wetland area southeast of downtown Watertown.

The project focuses on improving water quality, restoring native plants, and creating better habitat for wildlife. It also supports long-term environmental health while enhancing the natural character of the area.

Restoring a wetland takes time. While major restoration work is underway, ongoing care is needed to help native plants grow and thrive. This includes managing invasive species and supporting the development of a healthy, balanced ecosystem.

Work over the next several years will include vegetation management, buffer restoration, and maintenance activities such as mowing, targeted herbicide treatments, and a planned prescribed burn. These efforts will become less intensive over time as native vegetation becomes established.

Upcoming Work

Work on the Watertown Wetland Restoration Project is resumed in June 2026 including:

  • Herbicide treatments to manage cattails and other invasive vegetation.
  • Ongoing vegetation management throughout the growing season, as needed.

 A prescribed burn is planned for 2028 pending site conditions and coordination.
