What is Geocaching?
Geocaching is an entertaining adventure game for GPS (Global Positioning System) users. The basic idea is to have individuals or organizations hide caches all over the world and share the locations of these caches on the internet.
One of the most popular sites is 'geocaching.com'. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. When the geocacher finds and collects an item from a cache they should replace the collected item with one of equal or greater value so that the next visitor can find treasure too!
Private Geocaching Programs
One of the neat things about Geocaching is you can do it anywhere! For our private group programming, Carver County Parks instructors will set-up a custom geocaching course at an appropriate difficulty level with unique treasures for your group.
For example, we offer 'Geocaching for S'mores' where participants search for the ingredients needed to make the treats! Similarly, we can offer environmental education based geocaching for trees, nature facts, puzzle pieces, etc. The program is highly customizable! Each event includes instruction on using the GPS unit and tips for being successful.
Carver County Parks can facilitate private geocaching programming with a variety of groups at the location of their choice.
Geocache Guidelines & Registration
A cache is normally a waterproof container, bag, or small can hidden in a hollow tree, stump or in a wooded area. Caches are listed on the internet at www.geocaching.com by people who choose to place them at a specific location.
Register a Cache
To place a cache within the Carver County Park System, please submit a 'Geocache Site Registration Form'. Contact the Parks office at (952) 466-5250 or parks@carvercountymn.gov with any questions.
