Carver County is upgrading traffic signal technology at select intersections across the county to improve traffic operations, safety, and accessibility. This project focuses on modernizing traffic signal equipment, expanding fiber optic communications, and improving pedestrian facilities at key intersections.

Once complete, county staff will be able to monitor traffic signals and conditions remotely, respond more quickly to issues, and better manage traffic flow. The project also includes improvements that support safer and more accessible crossings for people walking, including those with visual impairments.

Traffic Impacts

Traffic impacts are expected to be limited and short-term. Most work will occur outside of the roadway.

Short-term lane closures or lane shifts may be required at some intersections, primarily to complete pedestrian curb ramp and Accessible Pedestrian Signal (APS) upgrades. These closures will typically occur during off-peak hours.

In some cases, lane shifts or closures may remain in place overnight to allow concrete curb, gutter, and adjacent roadway work to cure. Brief lane closures (approximately one hour) may be required to safely install video detection cameras on signal mast arms.

Access for emergency vehicles, schools, businesses, and residents will be maintained throughout construction.

Project Locations

Improvements vary by location and are based on existing conditions and system needs. Depending on the intersection, work may include traffic signal communication upgrades, vehicle detection improvements, new or upgraded cameras, and pedestrian accessibility enhancements such as Accessible Pedestrian Signal (APS) push buttons and curb ramp upgrades.

Not every improvement will occur at every location.
